Emergencies are scary, but you don’t have to face them alone. At Great Plains Veterinary Clinic, we’re prepared to help when the unexpected happens. Whether it’s a sudden injury, a serious illness, or something that just doesn’t seem right, our team is ready to act quickly and compassionately.

If your pet is in distress, call us right away. We'll guide you through what to do next and let you know if your pet should be seen immediately.

What Qualifies as a Pet Emergency?

Some symptoms are clear red flags, while others can be easy to miss. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to call.

Please seek emergency care if your pet experiences the following:

  • Difficulty breathing or choking
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours
  • Sudden collapse or difficulty standing
  • Trauma (car accidents, falls, wounds)
  • Ingestion of toxins (chocolate, medications, household items)
  • Seizures or tremors
  • Swollen or painful abdomen
  • Straining to urinate or defecate (especially in male cats)
  • Refusal to eat or drink for over 24 hours

Even if the issue seems minor, we’re happy to assess and help you make the right call.
